Apartment Cat Gear That Actually Helps
At City Kitten, we believe in "enrichment over clutter." Living in a smaller space means being intentional about what you bring into your home. Here is the gear that truly makes a difference for urban felines.
Think Vertical
When floor space is limited, go up! Cats feel safest when they can observe their kingdom from a height.
- Cat Trees: Look for slim, floor-to-ceiling tension poles that take up minimal floor space.
- Window Perches: Suction-cup window beds are a game-changer for "cat TV."
Smart Scratching
Scratching is a biological necessity, not a behavior problem. If you don't provide a spot, they'll choose your sofa.
Opt for vertical sisal posts or cardboard loungers. Cardboard loungers are great because they double as a bed and can be tucked under furniture when guests visit.
Resource Zoning
In a small apartment, it's tempting to put everything in one corner. However, cats prefer their resources separated.
- Food vs. Water: Many cats prefer their water fountain to be at least a few feet away from their food bowl.
- The Litter Box: Use a high-sided box to prevent tracking, and keep it in a quiet, low-traffic area.
The Right Carrier
For city dwellers, a carrier is essential for subway rides or vet trips. Choose a front-loading hard carrier or a sturdy backpack carrier with plenty of ventilation. Leave it out in the apartment as a "safe hide" so your cat doesn't associate it only with stressful trips.
Note: City Kitten provides educational resources and digital guides. We do not sell physical products, but we highly recommend investing in quality basics from your local pet supply store.
